(1816-1874), edited the Rochester Advertiser from 1845 to 1849. He originated and promulgated the doctrine known as "Squatter Sovereignty" or "Popular Sovereignty," that the people of each territory should decide the question of slavery for themselves. He edited the Rochester Union from 1857 to 1864. He was an original writer upon economic and political subjects.
