This name is. sometimes, given to erysipelas, especially when of a local character. It is, also, applied to the morbid redness on the cheeks of the hectic, and on the skin covering phlegmon. It forms the 6th genus of the 3d order, Exanthemata, of Bateman's classification of cutaneous diseases; and is defined, nearly continuous redness of some portion of the skin, attended with disorder of the constitution, but not contagious. Many varieties are described by dermatologists.
