Expiratory movements in which the ordinary expiratory efforts due to the elasticity of the lungs, thorax, and abdomen are assisted and increased by the so-called expiratory auxiliaries, i. e., the abdominal and part of the thoracic muscles. If the respiratory movements become excessively labored there is brought into coordinate action every muscle in the body which can either directly, or indirectly, by giving fixed support to other muscles, lessen the cavity of the thorax, and thus force the air from the lungs.
