An American ethnologist; born in Wilkesbarre, Pa., April 23, 1831; died in Washington, Oct. 24, 1894. His works in part are: "A Calendar of the Dakota Nation" (1877); "Sign Language among the North American Indians compared with That among Other Peoples and Deaf Mutes" (1881). He, besides, contributed much to periodicals.
