A German poet and novelist; born in Munich, Jan. 3, 1835, winning note at the university there. His "Necessity", and other poems of equal merit, are characterized by originality and picturesqueness, while his novels-notably "The Old Practitioner"-show him a graceful and graphic delineator of character and customs. He ranks among the best contemporary German writers, his versatility not having impaired his quality.
