An Italian Pietist poet and satirist; born at Todi about 1230; died at Collazzone, Dec. 25, 1306. He was a prominent lawyer, who lost his wife, became a monk, and got involved in politics. He wrote dialect poems in support of his party; the stinging sarcasm of his rhymes aimed against Pope Boniface VIII. causing them to be particularly remembered. The hymn "Stabat Mater" is attributed to him, although the authorship has been disputed.
