A German humorist, philanthropist, and man of letters; born in Danzig, Oct. 28, 1768; died Feb. 14, 1826. His capacity for satire was considerable: a "Pocket Book for Friends of Jest and Satire" (1797) proving very popular, as did "Men and Heroes" (1796), a satire in verse, and "Prometheus" (1804), a dramatic poem. His volume on Goethe is still valuable.
