(1812-1862), was an editor of the Columbia, Tenn., Observer from 1834 to 1841. He became an editor of the Nashville Banner in 1841. He was Comptroller of Tennessee from 1844 to 1849, represented Tennessee in the U. S. Congress as a Whig from 1853 to 1859, and was an advocate of extreme Southern views. He entered the Confederate service as a brigadier-general, and was killed in the battle of Mill Spring.
