Born in 1818, was a Judge of the Supreme Court for the Eighth Judicial District from 1857 to 1868 and a U. S. Representative from 1869 to 1870, when he became U. S. Attorney for Southern New York. From 1872 to 1887 he was a Justice of the New York Supreme Court, becoming Presiding Justice in 1874.
